Delegation of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan visits MP (2026-05-20)

In order to strengthen cooperation and exchanges in mutual legal assistance (MLA) between the Public Prosecutions Office of the Macao SAR (MP) and the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Prosecutor General Tong Hio Fong received an 11-member delegation of the Government of Republic of Kazakhstan led by the country’s Prosecutor General Berik Assylov today (May 20).

During the meeting, Prosecutor General Tong Hio Fong acknowledged that the three MLA agreements in criminal matters, which were entered into between the delegation and the Macao SAR Government in this visit, were significant achievements in judicial cooperation between the two places. Enforcement of those agreements will further enhance the criminal judicial cooperation regime between the Macao SAR and Kazakhstan, and will regulate assistance in case investigation, transfer of evidence and other practices. Mr Tong also reiterated that the MP attaches great importance to external judicial exchanges and cooperation, and actively seeks to foster practical collaboration with prosecutorial agencies of various countries and regions. He pledged that the MP will continue to optimize cross-border judicial collaboration mechanism for the rule of law and international cooperation.

Prosecutor General of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Berik Assylov, recognized the three MLA agreements in criminal matters signed this time as cornerstones for criminal justice cooperation with the Macao SAR. Once the agreements enter into force, they will serve as legal grounds for the transfer of sentenced persons and surrender of fugitive offenders between the two places. Mr Assylov believed that the agreements signed during this visit will further promote practical cooperation and help optimize the legal assistance mechanism between the judiciary of the two places.

Furthermore, representatives of both sides discussed and exchanged views on the two prosecutorial systems, their respective functions, duties and case statistics, among other topics.
